VOICES, DANCES & A WINTER’S NIGHT

The piece begins with a winter night scene in which delicate string and vibraphone sounds create a cool, calm atmosphere. Into this stillness enter voices in the form of solo instruments, which initially swirl around like snowflakes, but then gradually come together and respond to each other. Some form free-flowing melodic strands that increase in intensity until the end, while others become repetitive rhythms that begin to interact with each other like a dance – with the same pulse, but in their own way.

The title also reflects the three central ideas on which the piece is based. “Voices” refers to the members of the BKO, some of whom appear as soloists at the beginning. “Dances” creates links with other works in the program, “On The Town” by Leonard Bernstein and the “Tap Dance Concerto” by Morton Gould. In addition, the short piano solo at the beginning refers to the “Rhapsody in Blue”. And as the world premiere will take place on a winter evening in December, the winter night setting was almost a natural choice…
