With “EARTH”, the MARTIN STREULE JAZZ ORCHESTRA continues the concert cycle “The Four Elements”, which began in 2003. After the large, symphonic soundscapes of “WATER”, “EARTH” is dominated by small soundscapes with an associative character, which interact with each other in six scenes.

The first part of the program focuses on the physical properties of the blue planet. After the musical big bang at the beginning, the rotation of the earth sounds like a heavy groove with bizarre blues references.

As the piece progresses, landscapes float across the stage as recitative and aria, and unpredictable forces of nature collide in brute force as fast-moving thematic fragments, creating space for something new.

The second part of the work is dedicated to the numerous life forms that emerge from the earth. Life in its very own form appears in pulsating, groovy, percussive melodies with surprising twists and turns. A ballad, played by a quintet with deep, warm instruments and carried by the soft sound of the orchestra, dedicates the quietest minutes of the evening to the “mother among the elements”. Afterwards, wild, ecstatic dance music in a raw groove patchwork on the theme of “Gods and Rituals” concludes the program and releases the EARTHlings back into everyday life on earth.

“Streule is a sensitive sound sculptor who shapes and forms the sounds of his ensemble more strictly than is usual in jazz.”
